As traditional sources of funding dip, universities are scrambling for the cash to support fundamental research and move science from the lab to market, and they are turning to various forms of collaboration—sponsored research, licensing revenues, royalties, and equity, among others—to tap into a large pool of funds and capital. Creativity in financial and legal arrangements can help bring money from the future (commercialized products) into the present (the research delivering the inventions) but organizational and cultural adaptation are necessary both to deliver these resources and to make the most of them.
